If there is one exercise which every rookie calisthenics do-er wants to master in the starting, then it has to be the 'Muscle Ups'. Why? Simple. It looks impressive & tough than all other exercises you see in the gym! Everyone starts looking at you when they observe you going for a pull up but then you give them a shock by transitioning from the pull move into a push move by ending up on the bar, they are like WTF was that?!! Most people have never seen a move like that unless they are into calisthenics or gymnastics. It is a transition move which means; you have to transition from pull movement to push movement at one go & trust me, most people cant do it.
Okay, that was the impressive part of it, now I will come to the benefits attached to it. 1. It is a remarkable display of upper body strength. It is a rare exercise because both your 'PUSHING' as well as 'PULLING' muscles of upper body have got to be strong and trained in order to perform a single repetition of a strict Muscle-up. You can ignore it, criticize it, underestimate it but can never replace it with any other move! 2. It increases your explosive strength. You have to pull yourself high enough on the bar where transition can become possible and for doing that, you have to pull yourself really explosively so that the level of bar reaches somewhere around your chest. Explosive strength is one of the most important aspect of strength in a human body on which martial artist, arm wrestlers & all other athletes heavily rely upon! 3. It is a compound body movement. Any exercise in which multiple muscles work together to complete one repetition, that exercise comes in the category of compound movement. Now why should that even matter? Because compound movement increases your testosterone levels & thus makes you far stronger. Moreover, Isolation movements fails to teach your mind to work in a union & that is where compound movements plays significant role. They make you more functional, stronger & helps you develop a more all-round proportionate body, period. 4. It looks impressive AF Most people can certainly not do a muscle up, they may think that it doesn't look that hard but the moment they grab the bar & go for it for the first time, the reality struck them real hard! Ask 100 random people in public. I'd be shocked if you found even 1 person who can perform one with a proper form. Rare moves are impressive as f**k.
